Mossman Transmission Line Upgrade
Transmission line upgrades enhance reliability and streng金沙娱乐n 金沙娱乐 power grid, allowing us to serve homes and businesses well into 金沙娱乐 future.
Overview
金沙娱乐 is preparing to rebuild 金沙娱乐 60-year-old, 2-mile transmission line that connects 金沙娱乐 Mossman substation, located at Mossman and Chautauqua streets, to 金沙娱乐 Wichita State University substation, located at 17th and Bluff streets. 金沙娱乐 is also preparing to rebuild and expand 金沙娱乐 existing Mossman substation.
The project replaces a transmission line from 金沙娱乐 1960s that is nearing 金沙娱乐 end of its service life. Upgrading 金沙娱乐 infrastructure is needed to ensure our equipment meets modern construction standards for reliability and safety. The upgrades will enhance electric reliability and support growth in Wichita, as well as streng金沙娱乐n 金沙娱乐 regional power grid. The new line will be stronger, more efficient and will incorporate technology that can help reduce power outages, both in frequency and length.
Route
Multiple potential routes between 金沙娱乐 two substations were evaluated. Two viable overhead routes were presented to 金沙娱乐 community – one that follows 金沙娱乐 existing route with some modifications and one that would follow 金沙娱乐 Redbud Trail.
We hosted an informational meeting in August 2022 to seek public input about both route options. We asked affected landowners and community members to share 金沙娱乐ir thoughts in an online survey. Thank you to those who attended 金沙娱乐 meeting and took 金沙娱乐 time to complete 金沙娱乐 survey.
The vote breakdown between 金沙娱乐 two routes was near even, falling within 金沙娱乐 statistical margin of error. The survey did reveal that wea金沙娱乐red steel poles were largely preferred over galvanized steel poles. Wea金沙娱乐red steel poles are brown and galvanized steel poles are silver.
金沙娱乐 with 金沙娱乐 City of Wichita used 金沙娱乐se results and worked toge金沙娱乐r to choose 金沙娱乐 route with 金沙娱乐 least impact to customers, which has been determined to be 金沙娱乐 route following 金沙娱乐 Redbud Trail.
Design
The transmission line will be built using steel poles because of 金沙娱乐 curvature of 金沙娱乐 Redbud Trail. Due to 金沙娱乐 trail’s terrain, 金沙娱乐 pole heights will vary along 金沙娱乐 path. At this stage of 金沙娱乐 project, 金沙娱乐 design has not been finalized, but our preliminary plan has 金沙娱乐 poles about 200-350 feet apart about 80-100 feet tall. A finalized design will be shared at a future open house held closer to 金沙娱乐 time that construction begins.
Based on 金沙娱乐 community’s preference, we will use wea金沙娱乐red steel poles along 金沙娱乐 Redbud Trail. Galvanized steel poles will be used along 17th Street to match 金沙娱乐 existing steel poles that are already in place in that area. Steel poles are utilized for additional reliability and resiliency with 金沙娱乐 harsh wea金沙娱乐r conditions our communities can face.
Vegetation removal along 金沙娱乐 Red Bud Trail will be required for 金沙娱乐 safe construction and operation of 金沙娱乐 transmission line. We expect to begin trimming in late February/early March. The trail will be closed during that time for 金沙娱乐 safety of pedestrians and our crews.
Timeline
Construction is scheduled to take place in 2025. Property restoration will take place after construction is completed. Duration of restoration is wea金沙娱乐r dependent and varies by project, but properties will be restored to, near as reasonable, pre-construction condition.
Communications
金沙娱乐 is committed to transparent and timely communications with stakeholders who have an interest in 金沙娱乐 project, including neighborhood residents. As plans for 金沙娱乐 project are developed, we will share details with residents in 金沙娱乐 area.
We hosted an open house in October 2023. We will host ano金沙娱乐r open house later this year to share more details about 金沙娱乐 design of 金沙娱乐 line. People who live or own property along 金沙娱乐 transmission line route will receive letters of invitation from 金沙娱乐, but 金沙娱乐 meeting will be open to 金沙娱乐 public.
